Out of the womb, we begin to learn. Even though we do not know it, learning is one of the most prominent things we do as we grow up. Since I was a baby, I have had 5 key learning experiences to get to where I am now. 1. The first learning experience I can remember is “playing school” with my sister. She is a couple years older than me, so everything she learned in the early years of school, she would teach me when she got back home from school. She was the strictest teacher I ever had, but she taught me so much! When I entered elementary school, I was prepared. Along with being able to read, I was a great LEGO builder! 2. The next learning experience I remember is in the driveway shooting hoops. My dad would give me pointers and I became a student of the game. From that point forward, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the game of basketball. Every chance I got, I watched basketball on television. Making sure to watch the best players, I tried to gain knowledge on how they play, why they play that way, and what they did to get to their level of expertise. 3. Finally to the school system, we started to read books religiously in the fifth grade. After we read the books, we took tests on the books on a computer. Reading these books, and remembering the information for the test, was a struggle for me. Reading and recalling information definitely did not come easy, and it is something I still have not remotely mastered. I opted for the shorter books, unlike the book pictured, to read and attempt to remember. 4. A prominent experience in my learning came in the keyboarding class in elementary school. This was something I was successful at and enjoyed! Right away, I picked up typing, and was able to type very quickly and accurately. I believe this is a key experience because typing has become something that every student needs to know. No longer can I rely on writing out a paper with a pen and paper. Instead, because of the new technology that we have at our fingertips, typing on phones and computers is the mode of writing I must use. 5. The final learning experience I want to discuss is my first year of college. Accompanying a culture shock, stress, and very little time, was a lot of homework. During this time, I learned to be extremely organized to the point where I planned out my days. Once I had a daily schedule, it was easy for me to make sure I finished my assignments and accomplished my goals. I am grateful for this experience as I learned how productive I can be if I strategically plan my time and activities. Through these five experiences, I have become the learner I am today. Yes, I have my flaws. However, I have self-recognizable strengths that I use everyday to increase my knowledge and knowledge capacity. Luckily, learning is a life long process.
I plan learn, as I have in these five moments, for as long as I am able.
